To fulfil another IMF condition, govt moves to deregulate sugar sector

In order to fulfil yet another condition put forward by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the federal government has prepared the draft of the policy for deregulating the sugar sector, it was reported on Thursday.

Sources said that there was a proposal in the draft to lift restrictions on setting up new sugar mills in the country.

They added that there was also a proposal to drop the condition of seeking permission from the provincial government before setting up a new sugar mill.

Another proposal, sources informed, was to allow sugar mills’ owners to import raw sugar except during the crushing season.

Similarly, there is suggestion not to abolish the Sugar Advisory Board.

There are also suggestions to amend laws for the deregulation of the sugar sector.
