US orders Americans to exit Iran for safety

WASHINGTON / TEHRAN: The U.S. government on Tuesday urged all American citizens to leave Iran immediately, citing rising protests across the country that could turn violent. The advisory comes amid worsening tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and fresh round of U.S. sanctions.

An alert from the U.S. virtual embassy in Iran said American citizens should depart Iran “as soon as possible,” using land routes through Armenia or Turkey when possible, and to make plans that do not involve U.S. government help. “Protests are intensifying across Iran and could escalate into violence,” said the advisory.

To those who were not planning to leave, the embassy advised them to stay indoors in safe places, not to attend demonstrations, and to store food, water, medicine, and other essentials.

This move comes amidst increased U.S.–Iran tensions. Media reports from the United States indicate that Vice President J.D. Vance, along with senior aides, urged President Donald Trump to emphasize the need for diplomacy supported by military readiness against Tehran. Meanwhile, Trump has imposed new trade actions, slapping a 25 percent tariff on countries doing business with Iran.

U.S. officials also signaled that the White House is reviewing Iran’s recent offer to resume talks on its nuclear program. “Diplomatic avenues are being considered though military options remain on the table,” an official familiar with the discussions told outlets.

The latest advisory reflects Washington’s heightening concern over American security in Iran amid ongoing protests across various cities. Demonstrations have reportedly erupted over economic woes, political disaffection, and antipathy to outside pressure, including sanctions and perceived military threats.

Experts claim the warning is both a step against security risks to U.S. citizens and, at the same time, the diplomatic message to the Tehran government to show Washington is watching events inside the country unfold. Similar advisories have been issued before, but this one puts an emphasis on urgency.

It further counsels Americans in Iran to register with local contacts at the embassy and maintain open lines of communication. The embassy also emphasized that any travel outside the country should be carefully planned with safety, border conditions, and logistical hurdles in mind. With the tensions spiraling up, Washington continues a delicate balancing act between the calls for diplomacy and economic and military pressure on Tehran, reflecting precisely the fragile and complex nature of the U.S.–Iran relations in the region.
