French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly expressed confusion over U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions regarding Greenland. The messages were shared online by Trump and confirmed as authentic by sources close to Macron.
Macron suggested inviting Russia, Ukraine, Denmark, and Syria to participate on the margins of the upcoming G7 summit. He also invited Trump for a dinner in Paris. In the messages, Macron addressed Trump as “my friend.” He emphasized that they were “totally in line” on Syria and said the two could collaborate on Iran.
The messages do not include Trump’s responses. They were posted on his Truth Social account early Tuesday. Neither the White House nor Macron’s office responded to requests for comment.
The messages come amid rising tensions between the United States and Europe over Greenland. Trump recently threatened new tariffs on European goods. He linked the tariffs to his interest in acquiring Greenland. Macron called Trump’s threat “unacceptable.”
The Truth Social post appeared shortly after Trump announced a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes. Trump claimed the move was meant to push Macron to support his “Board of Peace” initiative.
EU leaders are scheduled to meet in Brussels on Thursday for an emergency summit to discuss Trump’s Greenland plans. Meanwhile, Macron is set to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He will arrive Tuesday morning and return to Paris Tuesday evening. There are no plans for Macron to extend his stay to coincide with Trump’s arrival.
In December, Macron said Europe may need to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This would happen if U.S.-led efforts to broker a peace deal in Ukraine fail. Macron added that France now provides two-thirds of intelligence to Ukraine, largely replacing the U.S. role.
