ECP allows 23 suspended lawmakers back to Parliament

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has reinstated the membership of 23 legislators from the Senate, National Assembly, and provincial assemblies. This comes after they submitted their annual statements of assets and liabilities for the financial year 2024-25.

The restored lawmakers include two Senators, 11 National Assembly members, three each from the Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies, and one from the Balochistan Assembly.

These parliamentarians had been suspended on January 16 for missing the mandatory disclosure deadline of December 31. The requirement is outlined under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017. With their filings now completed, the legislators are allowed to resume their parliamentary duties.

Earlier, the ECP had suspended a total of 159 members for failing to submit their asset declarations. Out of these, 113 members had already had their memberships restored after submitting the necessary documents.

Currently, 46 lawmakers remain suspended. They have yet to provide their annual statements of assets and liabilities for the financial year 2024-25.

The ECP has emphasized that submitting these declarations is a legal requirement. It ensures transparency and accountability among elected representatives. Officials said the commission will continue to monitor compliance closely.

The restoration of memberships allows the lawmakers to participate fully in parliamentary proceedings, including voting and committee work. Analysts say the move strengthens legislative functions and maintains the operational integrity of the assemblies.
