Punjab CM orders province-wide fire safety audit following Karachi blaze

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed a comprehensive audit of fire safety systems across the province in response to the devastating fire at Karachi’s Gul Plaza, which has claimed at least 29 lives.

In an official statement, the chief minister announced that new standard operating procedures (SOPs) will be formulated to strengthen fire prevention measures in both public and private buildings. She emphasized that thorough inspections would be conducted to identify potential hazards, including faulty electrical systems, and to ensure timely interventions to prevent future fire incidents.

“Safety protocols will be rigorously enforced in government offices, hospitals, schools, and private institutions to protect lives and property,” Maryam Nawaz said, highlighting the government’s commitment to public safety. She also called for heightened awareness and adherence to fire safety regulations among building owners and managers.

The Gul Plaza tragedy in Karachi continues to cast a somber shadow over the nation. Rescue teams are still searching through the debris, and 86 people remain unaccounted for. Authorities have confirmed the identities of three more victims, bringing the total confirmed to 11. At least 17 bodies are still awaiting identification through DNA testing.

The Punjab government’s move comes amid growing concerns over fire safety standards nationwide, prompting authorities to take decisive action to prevent such catastrophic incidents in the future.
