Rani Mukerji’s ‘Mardaani 3’ secures anti-piracy court order

The Madras High Court has issued an interim anti-piracy injunction to protect the upcoming thriller Mardaani 3, starring Rani Mukerji. The order, delivered on Wednesday, January 28, comes ahead of the film’s scheduled theatrical release on January 30, 2026.

The injunction was requested by the film’s producer, Yash Raj Films, to prevent unauthorized online distribution, telecasts, or any form of public broadcast before the movie hits cinemas. Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy instructed internet service providers and cable operators to refrain from sharing or transmitting the film without proper authorization.

The court emphasized that pre-release piracy can cause irreversible commercial losses to copyright holders. Once a film leaks into the public domain, recovering revenue becomes nearly impossible, making preventive legal measures crucial for producers of high-profile releases.

At the same time, the court recognized that such orders could affect legitimate businesses. To mitigate this, it allowed the injunction to remain in effect only if Yash Raj Films provides an indemnity to protect intermediaries from potential financial losses incurred due to compliance.

Mardaani 3, directed by Abhiraj Minawala, is the latest installment in the popular thriller series. The legal intervention ensures that audiences will have the opportunity to watch the film in theatres as intended, while maintaining a balance between protecting intellectual property and safeguarding commercial interests of service providers.
