Punjab plans Rs57 billion subsidy to encourage people to buy electric vehicles

The Punjab transport department has forwarded to the provincial government a proposal to announce incentives of Rs57 billion so that people could be encouraged to buy electric vehicles, it was reported on Monday.

It has been learnt that the government has planned to announce a direct subsidy on electric bikes, rickshaws and cars.

It plans to give a subsidy between Rs20,000 and Rs30,000 on electric bikes; Rs25,000 on electric rickshaws, Rs100,000 on small electric cars and Rs200,000 subsidy on large electric cars.

Giving a subsidy between Rs400,000 and Rs500,000 on buses and commercial vehicles is also on the cards.

The government has set a target of setting up 1,200 level one charging points across Lahore.

There is also a proposal to set up 400 battery sweeping and 300 fast charging stations.

Those setting up charging stations will get capital subsidy and concessions in paying tax.

Similarly, there is a suggestion to exempt those converting petrol pumps into charging stations from paying the property tax.

Under the plan, battery testing labs will be established for local industry, while special incentives will be announced for battery recycling plants and industrial units.

Furthermore, there is a proposal to convert government and public transport vehicles into electric vehicles in phases.

The purpose of all these steps is reduce the import cost of petrol and diesel and reduce pollution.
