Opposition leader alleges serious deterioration in Imran Khan’s eyesight

Opposition Leader in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas has raised serious concerns over the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, claiming that his eyesight has significantly deteriorated while in custody and that he was not provided timely and effective medical treatment.

Speaking during a Senate session, the opposition leader said it was unfortunate that the public had repeatedly been given the impression that Imran Khan was in good health and facing no medical issues. He argued that if regular family visits had been allowed, medical examinations had been conducted transparently, and reports had been made public, the situation might not have reached this stage.

He emphasized that the state is fully responsible for the life and health of any person held in custody. Political differences, he said, cannot justify denying a detainee basic human rights and essential medical care. Delays in treatment, withholding medical information, and restricting family access were described as inhumane actions and a failure to uphold constitutional and legal obligations.

Allama Raja Nasir Abbas announced that he is formally sending complete details of the case, including evidence and a timeline, to national and international human rights organizations as well as foreign diplomats stationed in Pakistan. He urged authorities to immediately form an independent and transparent medical board, make the full medical record public, and identify those responsible for any negligence so that action can be taken under the law.

He stressed that the issue goes beyond one individual. According to him, if a former prime minister and a popular political leader can face such conditions, it raises serious questions about the safety and rights of ordinary citizens in custody. He called on the state to ensure that political disagreements do not override human dignity and fundamental rights.

Concluding his address, he demanded urgent and serious action to ensure justice, transparency, and respect for human dignity, so that no prisoner in the future has to endure a similar situation.
