Sindh Assembly rejects Karachi province proposal, vows unity

The Sindh Assembly has passed a strong resolution against any move to create a separate Karachi province. Lawmakers declared that Karachi is an inseparable part of Sindh. The resolution was adopted during a session held in Karachi on Saturday.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah tabled the resolution in the House. He spoke firmly against what he described as divisive statements. He said attempts to detach Karachi from Sindh go against history. He added that such ideas also contradict the Constitution and democratic norms.

The chief minister said the people of Sindh reject any conspiracy to divide the province. He told the assembly that Sindh’s unity is sacred. He made it clear that Karachi has always been part of Sindh and will remain so in the future.

The resolution strongly condemns any proposal to break Sindh or carve out Karachi as a separate administrative unit. It reaffirms the assembly’s commitment to protect the geographical and political integrity of the province.

The move comes after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) demanded that Karachi be declared a federal territory. The party suggested invoking Articles 148 and 149 of the Constitution to bring the city under federal control.

MQM-P leader and Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal made the demand after the tragic Gul Plaza fire in January. The blaze erupted on January 17. It continued for nearly two days before being extinguished. At least 73 people lost their lives. Around 1,200 shops were damaged in the incident.

Following the tragedy, senior MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar criticised the provincial government. He urged Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to remove the Sindh chief minister and other officials. He argued that the provincial administration had failed to fulfil its responsibilities. He also suggested that Karachi should be handed over to the Centre if the Sindh government could not manage the city effectively.

In response, the Sindh government has taken a clear and firm stance. Provincial leaders say Karachi’s status is not open to debate. They insist that the metropolis is historically, constitutionally and politically part of Sindh.
