Torkham customs seize Rs48M silver hidden in truck tyres

Customs officials at the Torkham border carried out a major operation and recovered silver worth over Rs48 million. The seizure took place when a truck returning from Afghanistan was stopped for inspection.

Collector of Customs Ghulam Mustafa said the truck was carrying an Afghan family back to Afghanistan. However, during the routine check at the import terminal, officials discovered 30 kilograms of silver hidden inside the truck’s tyres. The smugglers had carefully concealed the silver to avoid detection.

The collector confirmed that the total value of the recovered silver is estimated at Rs4.8 crore. Authorities said the operation highlights the ongoing efforts to stop smuggling at border points and ensure strict enforcement of customs regulations.

Officials also warned smugglers that such attempts would be met with strict action and that security measures at Torkham and other border crossings have been strengthened. The recovered silver has been seized and is now under official custody for further investigation.

Earlier, Pakistan Customs intercepted a passenger attempting to smuggle 50 tolas of gold in the form of bars and coins at Jinnah International Airport, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The seizure took place in the departure area of the airport’s terminal, where Customs officers discovered 8 gold bars and 8 coins during a thorough inspection of the suspect. The recovered gold is valued at approximately Rs 2.5 crore.

Assistant Collector of Customs, Khizr Faiz, said the passenger was traveling to Dubai on flight EA 607 when the gold was found during a physical search. Authorities immediately registered a case against the individual and confiscated the seized gold.
