Dasun Shanaka breaks silence after PSL ban, issues apology

Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka has broken his silence after being handed a one-year ban from the Pakistan Super League (PSL), expressing regret over his decision to withdraw from the tournament and apologising to fans, teams, and the cricketing community.

The 34-year-old was penalised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after he withdrew from his contract with Lahore Qalandars during PSL 11. He had been signed for PKR 7.5 million but later opted out of the league before joining the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League as a replacement player.

Following a review of the case, the PCB concluded that Shanaka’s withdrawal violated league regulations and contractual obligations under the player registration system. As a result, he has been declared ineligible for PSL 12 in 2027.

In his statement, Shanaka expressed deep regret over the incident and acknowledged the disappointment caused by his actions. He said the Pakistan Super League is a prestigious tournament and admitted that his decision had let down fans and stakeholders.

He specifically apologised to Lahore Qalandars supporters, saying he was sorry for leaving the team at a crucial stage of the competition and disappointing loyal fans.

Shanaka also clarified that at the time of his withdrawal, he had no intention of participating in any other league, stressing that his decision was not influenced by alternative opportunities.
