Shagufta Ejaz sparks debate after candid remarks on Karachi

Veteran Pakistani television actress Shagufta Ejaz, known for her strong performances in classic dramas such as Aanch, Kashkol, Jangloos, and Zindagi Dhoop Tum Ghana Saya, has recently stirred discussion after her frank comments about the condition of Karachi during a television appearance.

Shagufta, who has also earned popularity through her role in the sitcom Bulbulay, continues to remain active in the entertainment industry while managing her own salon business in Karachi. Despite her busy professional life, she has often spoken openly about social issues, especially those related to her city.

During her appearance on a talk show hosted by Waseem Badami, she was asked to describe Karachi in one sentence. Responding without hesitation, Shagufta gave an unusually blunt answer, saying that the city felt “dirty,” while clarifying that her remarks came from a place of concern and emotional attachment rather than criticism for its own sake.

She further explained that as a resident of Karachi, her frustration stems from witnessing daily challenges faced by citizens, particularly the poor condition of infrastructure. According to her, the state of roads and urban planning often causes serious difficulties, especially during emergencies when quick and smooth transportation becomes essential.

Her comments quickly circulated on social media, where they sparked a mixed reaction. A large number of users agreed with her assessment, echoing concerns about sanitation, traffic congestion, and deteriorating civic facilities in the city. Many praised her for speaking honestly about issues that are often experienced but rarely voiced so directly by public figures.

However, not all responses were supportive. Some social media users felt her remarks were overly harsh and did not fairly represent the spirit or resilience of the city and its residents. This divide has once again highlighted the sensitivity surrounding public criticism of Karachi, one of Pakistan’s largest and most complex urban centers.
