The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a fresh alert warning of an intense heatwave likely to affect most parts of the country, particularly the plain regions, in the coming days.
According to the department, both the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) currently remain in a neutral phase.
However, despite these neutral conditions, a significant rise in temperatures is expected, especially in southern Punjab, upper Sindh, and Balochistan.
Officials stated that temperatures in many areas could climb 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal levels. In the plain regions, the mercury is forecast to range between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius, increasing the risk of heat-related health issues.
Experts have cautioned that such extreme weather conditions may lead to a surge in heatstroke, dehydration, and other health complications. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, have been advised to take extra precautions.
Citizens have been urged to limit unnecessary outdoor activities, particularly during peak daytime hours, and to stay hydrated by consuming adequate amounts of water. Authorities have also recommended staying in cool and shaded environments whenever possible.
Meanwhile, a temporary relief is expected in the upper regions of the country, where rainfall is forecast between April 27 and April 29. This precipitation may bring temperatures down by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in those areas.
However, the respite is likely to be short-lived, as meteorological experts warn that heat intensity could rise again after May 1. The department noted that the heatwave conditions may persist intermittently over the coming weeks.
The public has been advised to remain vigilant and to contact relevant emergency services in case of any heat-related incidents.
