MOSCOW: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, according to Russian news agencies.
President Putin said he had received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader and conveyed his best wishes, asking Araghchi to pass them along.
He expressed hope that the Iranian people would overcome the current difficult period and that peace would be established in the region.
Putin added that Russia would do whatever possible in the interests of Iran and countries in the region.
The Russian president further stated that Moscow intends to continue its strategic relations with Tehran.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Araghchi said that Iran–Russia ties are based on a strategic partnership that will continue to strengthen.
He also thanked Russia and President Putin for their support of Iran, according to Russian media.
Earlier, Araghchi had arrived in the northwestern Russian city of St. Petersburg.
The visit is being described as highly significant in the context of ongoing regional tensions, as diplomatic efforts continue to ease strains between Iran and the United States.
The Iranian foreign minister earlier visited Pakistan twice last week where he held meetings with the civilian and military leadership in Islamabad.
Abbas Araghchi met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in Islamabad following his return from Oman on Sunday.
The high-level meeting took place at a time when Pakistan is working to sustain momentum in ongoing diplomatic efforts between United States and Iran.
