Young batter Abdullah Fazal announced himself on the international stage in remarkable fashion by joining an elite list of Pakistan cricketers to score half-centuries in both innings of their Test debut.
The left-handed batter achieved the rare feat during the opening Test against Bangladesh national cricket team at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, delivering a composed performance that immediately caught the attention of cricket fans.
After scoring a confident 60 runs in the first innings, Fazal once again showed maturity beyond his years in Pakistan’s difficult fourth-innings chase of 268. The youngster played with patience and control, crafting another impressive knock of 66 from 113 balls, including 11 elegant boundaries.
With the achievement, Fazal became only the sixth Pakistani batter in history to score 50-plus runs in both innings on Test debut — a milestone that places him alongside some of the country’s most memorable debut performers.
Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was the first Pakistani to accomplish the feat when he scored an unbeaten 128 and 50 against South Africa national cricket team in 1997.
In 2003, Yasir Hameed produced one of the finest debuts in Pakistan Test history with scores of 170 and 105 against Bangladesh in Karachi.
Aggressive middle-order batter Umar Akmal followed with scores of 129 and 75 against New Zealand national cricket team in 2009, while Fakhar Zaman made 94 and 66 against Australia national cricket team in 2018.
Most recently, opener Abdullah Shafique achieved the landmark against Bangladesh in 2021.
Fazal’s fearless debut has now added another exciting chapter to Pakistan cricket history, with many already viewing the talented youngster as a future star in the national side.
