Australia have unveiled a balanced 15-player squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England, with a surprising omission of fast bowler Darcie Brown drawing attention in the cricketing world.
The defending powerhouse will be led by experienced all-rounder Sophie Molineux, marking a new era for Australia following the retirement of former captain Alyssa Healy. The leadership group also features Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath as vice-captains, adding depth and stability to the squad.
One of the biggest talking points of the selection was the exclusion of Darcie Brown, who was left out despite her impressive pace and recent performances. Selectors explained that the decision was based on expected English conditions and team balance rather than form alone.
Chief selector Shawn Flegler said the squad was carefully built around conditions and tactical flexibility. He admitted Brown was “unlucky” to miss out but emphasized confidence in the final combination.
Left-arm pacer Lucy Hamilton earned a place in the squad for her first World Cup appearance, offering variety in a pace-heavy attack. Her inclusion provides Australia with a different angle in bowling, especially in conditions where swing and variation could be crucial.
All-rounder Grace Harris also returns to the squad after missing recent series, adding explosive batting and useful bowling options. Her experience is expected to be a key asset in high-pressure matches.
Selectors highlighted that Australia have multiple right-arm pace options, and conditions in England may reduce the effectiveness of pure raw pace, making variation more valuable in the squad composition.
The tournament begins on June 12, with Australia placed in Group A alongside India, South Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. Their opening clash will be against South Africa at Old Trafford in Manchester on June 13.
The final will be played at Lord’s on July 5, where Australia will aim to continue their dominance in women’s cricket and chase another World Cup title in challenging English conditions.
