Indian actor Saif Ali Khan has said that modern Bollywood romantic comedies are struggling to connect with audiences. He described many recent films in the genre as “failed experiments.”
Khan shared his views in a recent interview while promoting his upcoming film Kartavya. He said rom-coms once played an important role in his career but their appeal has declined over time.
He is known for popular romantic films like Kal Ho Naa Ho and Hum Tum. Reflecting on that phase, he suggested the genre may have had its peak years ago. He even remarked that rom-coms “might have started and finished with me in a sense,” referring to his strong association with such films.
According to him, audience preferences have changed. Viewers now want more intense and realistic storytelling. Light romantic stories about privileged but confused characters no longer feel relatable to many people.
He explained that today’s films are expected to have stronger emotional impact. Stories are no longer just about entertainment. They need to “shake” the audience and leave a lasting impression.
Still, Khan did not completely dismiss the genre. He said he remains open to returning to rom-coms if he finds a script with strong emotional value and meaningful content.
Saif Ali Khan is currently starring in Kartavya, a 2026 crime drama where he plays the role of a police officer.
