The federal government has officially announced a three-day public holiday for Eid-ul-Azha, confirming that the country will observe holidays on 26, 27 and 28 May, it was reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, the announcement came after confirmation that the Zilhaj moon has been sighted in Pakistan on May 17, paving the way for Eid-ul-Azha to be observed nationwide on Wednesday, 27 May.
The moon was sighted in several cities, including Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Mardan, which led to the nationwide confirmation of the religious festival’s date.
The final announcement was made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, who confirmed that Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on 27 May following verified testimonies of moon sightings.
With the confirmation of the Zilhaj moon, preparations for Eid-ul-Azha have begun across the country. The festival holds great religious significance in the Islamic calendar, symbolising devotion, sacrifice, and communal unity.
Earlier, a key meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was held in Karachi to review moon sighting reports and determine the beginning of the Islamic month of Zilhaj. Public anticipation had increased as reports of possible sightings emerged from the port city.
