FIFA World Cup 2026: Football’s global governing body has announced a significant change to one of the sport’s most emotional traditions, introducing a new national anthem protocol that will involve every player in the match-day squad for the first time in World Cup history.
Under the revised format, all 26 players selected for a matchday squad will now participate in the anthem ceremony. Previously, only the starting eleven stood on the pitch while substitutes and non-starters remained near the technical area with coaching staff.
The new protocol will see every player gather on the field before kick-off, forming a unified group around the centre-circle banner. Substitutes will join the starting XI, creating a full-squad presence during one of football’s most symbolic and emotional pre-match moments.
Another key adjustment involves player positioning. Instead of facing the stands as in traditional ceremonies, both teams and match officials will now stand in a circular formation around the centre spot, facing each other. FIFA believes this will create a stronger sense of unity, respect, and shared occasion between opponents before the match begins.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the change as part of the organisation’s broader vision to modernize and enhance the World Cup experience for players and fans worldwide. He emphasized that the tournament continues to evolve not only in scale but also in emotional and cultural significance.
According to FIFA, the redesigned ceremony aims to strengthen the connection between players, referees, and supporters, turning the pre-match anthem into a more inclusive and powerful moment.
Set to be introduced at the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the new protocol is already generating global discussion among football fans and analysts.
While many have welcomed the move as a step toward greater inclusivity and spectacle, some traditionalists have raised questions about altering long-standing pre-match customs.
Nevertheless, FIFA remains confident that the updated anthem ceremony will become one of the defining visual moments of the 2026 tournament, symbolizing unity, respect, and the global spirit of the game.
