LONDON: Pakistan’s rising spin sensation Sufiyan Muqeem has firmly rejected speculation about leaving the country, delivering an emotional message to fans and reaffirming that representing Pakistan remains his biggest ambition.
The 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner found himself at the center of social media debate this week after joining English county side Derbyshire Falcons for the remainder of the 2026 Vitality Blast campaign. The move sparked rumors that the young cricketer was considering relocating abroad in pursuit of better career opportunities following limited chances at the international level.
However, Muqeem wasted little time in setting the record straight.
Taking to Instagram, the Pakistan spinner described the claims as “completely baseless” and emphasized that his stay in England is strictly for professional cricket commitments.
“The rumours about me leaving Pakistan are completely baseless. I am currently in England solely to play T20 cricket for Derbyshire Falcons,” Muqeem wrote.
In a heartfelt message that quickly gained attention among cricket fans, he added: “Pakistan is my identity, my pride and my homeland, and it will always come first for me. Long live Pakistan.”
The statement was widely welcomed by supporters, many of whom praised the young spinner for publicly addressing the speculation and reaffirming his loyalty to the national team.
Muqeem’s move to Derbyshire came after the county club sought a replacement for Afghanistan spinner Mohammad Ghazanfar. Ghazanfar’s availability was withdrawn by the Afghanistan Cricket Board as part of workload management plans, creating an opportunity for the Pakistani spinner to join the squad.
The county stint is expected to provide Muqeem with valuable experience in English conditions and an opportunity to further develop his skills in one of the world’s most competitive domestic T20 tournaments.
Since making his international debut for Pakistan national cricket team in 2023, Muqeem has emerged as one of Pakistan’s most promising spin bowlers. He has already represented the country in 19 T20 Internationals and four One-Day Internationals, earning praise for his control, variations, and ability to perform under pressure.
His clarification also comes at a time when discussions surrounding Pakistani cricketers exploring overseas opportunities have become increasingly common. While many players participate in foreign leagues to gain experience and exposure, Muqeem made it clear that his commitment to Pakistan remains unchanged.
For now, the talented spinner’s focus is on helping Derbyshire Falcons in the Vitality Blast. But his message leaves little doubt about where his heart lies—wearing Pakistan’s colors on the international stage and continuing to serve the country he proudly calls home.
