No lasting Pakistan-India peace without water accord, says Bilawal

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stated that lasting peace between Pakistan and India is not possible without the restoration and continuation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Addressing a seminar in Islamabad, he said that water is not merely a geographical issue but a matter of food security, the future, and human life. He added that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz had already demonstrated how disruptions to vital waterways can affect the global economy.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the waters of the Indus River are a guarantee of Pakistan’s survival and that using sea routes or water resources as weapons is a dangerous trend for global peace and stability.

He remarked that the world has realized that water resources have become a central issue in global politics and security, stressing that the international community must understand the seriousness of weaponizing water resources.

According to him, the 21st century could face the threat of water blockades and the use of water as a strategic weapon. He urged the international community to develop new international laws to prevent the weaponization of shared waterways and water resources.

The PPP Chairman warned that otherwise every river, strait, canal, and downstream country could become vulnerable to pressure from upstream states in the future. He said that India’s approach could set a dangerous precedent for the rest of the world.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty must remain intact and reaffirmed that Pakistan would never compromise on its water rights or the waters of the Indus River.
