Pakistan backs UN reforms as Ecuador’s Maria Fernanda Espinosa meets Ishaq Dar

Former Ecuadorian foreign minister and candidate for the post of United Nations secretary-general, María Fernanda Espinosa, met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday, where the two sides discussed the future of the multilateral system and the need for reforms within the United Nations.

According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, Dar welcomed Espinosa and reaffirmed Pakistan’s full support for strengthening the stability of the multilateral system while ensuring the central role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges.

During the meeting, Dar expressed hope that the next UN Secretary-General would introduce long-overdue reforms to make the world body more effective and responsive to contemporary international issues.

He also stressed that the new UN leadership should work towards the implementation of long-standing resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, particularly those concerning Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.

The deputy prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to upholding the principles and Charter of the United Nations, emphasizing respect for international law, international agreements, and a rules-based international order.
