Energy crisis averted after berthing largest LNG carrier at Port Qasim

Pakistan has averted the risk of an energy crisis after an emergency maritime operation successfully brought a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier safely to berth at Port Qasim despite severe monsoon weather and hazardous sea conditions.

The complex operation was completed through Port Qasim’s 49-kilometre navigational channel. The Port Qasim Authority described the mission as a historic achievement that helped safeguard the country’s energy security during adverse weather.

Demonstrating extensive operational expertise, the Port Qasim Authority safely guided the LNG carrier “SK Resolute” through the navigational channel and berthed the vessel despite rough seas caused by the ongoing monsoon.

The Port Qasim spokesperson said the highly complex operation was carried out under emergency conditions.

The spokesperson said two scheduled QatarEnergy LNG shipments had earlier returned under force majeure because of regional tensions, raising concerns over Pakistan’s energy supplies. In response, Pakistan LNG Limited secured an emergency spot cargo that was already at sea to help bridge the supply gap.

According to the Port Qasim spokesperson, the vessel carried 171,951 cubic metres of LNG, making it the largest LNG cargo ever handled at the PGPCL terminal. With a beam of 47.8 metres, the ship also became the widest LNG carrier to be accommodated at Port Qasim during the monsoon season.

The spokesperson said the successful operation played a vital role in protecting the national energy system by ensuring uninterrupted electricity generation and providing relief to millions of domestic and industrial consumers across the country.

The spokesperson added that the operation reflected the Port Qasim Authority’s professional capability, operational preparedness and commitment to protecting Pakistan’s national interests during challenging circumstances.
