Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched Rs900 million expansion and renovation project for Skardu International Airport to boost tourism and improve passenger facilities in Gilgit-Baltistan, it was reported on Monday.
According to details, the project includes expanding the terminal building, passenger lounges, check-in counters, parking area and cargo facilities to accommodate growing passenger traffic and future international operations.
According to the PAA, the terminal building will be expanded from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet, while the departure lounge capacity will increase from 300 to 900 passengers. The arrival lounge will also be expanded to accommodate up to 200 passengers, compared with the current capacity of 80.
The number of check-in counters will increase from 6 to 10, and parking capacity will triple from 200 to 600 vehicles. A modern cargo office block will also be constructed as part of the project.
The PAA said the expansion is expected to attract more international flights to Skardu and strengthen tourism in the region.
PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan said construction is in its initial phase, with line marking work currently underway.
