Five civilians killed, 11 injured as BLA separatists ambush security convoy in Mastung

At least five civilians were killed and 11 others sustained injuries when separatist militants ambushed a security forces convoy in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.

The attack occurred in Kand Umrani, a mountainous terrain situated roughly 25 kilometres from Mastung city. The proscribed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), the most prominent of several separatist factions active in the mineral-rich province, subsequently claimed responsibility for the assault.

According to local administrative officials, all five deceased victims were local residents caught in the crossfire. The 11 injured individuals were evacuated to the Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Raisani Memorial Hospital in Mastung; however, officials declined to clarify how many of the wounded were security personnel.

This ambush marks the third major assault on Pakistani security and law enforcement personnel in Balochistan within a fortnight. Prior to this incident, coordinated attacks had claimed the lives of 11 Pakistan Army soldiers in Lasbela and 21 police officers in Ziarat.

In response to the sharp escalation in militant activities, the Pakistani military launched a large-scale counter-insurgency campaign, dubbed ‘Operation Shaban’, on July 5. Security officials report that at least 129 militants have been killed across the province since the offensive commenced.

The federal government continues to attribute the wave of violence to foreign-backed networks seeking to destabilise Balochistan, where significant Chinese investments, including the deep-sea port at Gwadar, remain central to regional development plans.
