UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has voiced serious concern over recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group against Saudi Arabia, warning that the escalation could pull Yemen deeper into a wider regional conflict.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said the attacks were particularly worrying at a time when the Middle East was already facing multiple security and humanitarian challenges.
Dujarric cautioned that continued attacks from Yemen risked expanding the country’s involvement in the broader confrontation gripping the region. He stressed that Yemen should not become another front in an increasingly complex regional crisis.
The UN spokesperson also highlighted the wider consequences for international trade and energy supplies. The Middle East is already dealing with disruptions affecting transportation, energy security and commercial activity, making any further escalation particularly dangerous.
He called for an immediate end to attacks and threats against maritime traffic, stressing that freedom of navigation must be protected in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The two waterways are critical routes for international commerce, connecting major markets in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Any prolonged disruption could increase shipping costs, delay deliveries and place additional pressure on global energy markets.
Dujarric also urged all parties to exercise restraint and respect international humanitarian obligations. He said civilians and essential civilian infrastructure must be protected from the consequences of military confrontation.
The UN warning comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, where several overlapping conflicts and military confrontations have increased concerns about a broader regional escalation.
The latest Houthi attacks have also drawn condemnation from Pakistan. Islamabad has previously expressed strong opposition to missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and stressed the importance of regional stability.
Last month, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Usman Jadoon, condemned ballistic missile attacks launched by Yemen’s Houthi group towards Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan has consistently called for restraint and peaceful efforts to resolve regional disputes, while emphasising the need to protect civilians and maintain the security of neighbouring states.
The latest UN statement reflects growing international concern that continued attacks could transform Yemen’s already fragile situation into a larger regional crisis.
For Yemen, the warning comes at a particularly sensitive moment. Years of conflict have left the country facing severe humanitarian challenges, while renewed regional tensions could further complicate efforts to achieve lasting peace.
The UN’s message is therefore focused not only on stopping attacks but also on preventing Yemen from becoming another battleground in the region’s widening confrontation.
With maritime security, energy supplies and civilian safety increasingly at stake, the international community is pressing all sides to step back from escalation and preserve freedom of navigation through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
