WASHINGTON: Former US ambassador Douglas Silliman has criticized Washington’s strategy in the war against Iran, saying the repeated changes in America’s war aims indicate that the Trump administration lacks a clear long-term plan.
Speaking to Arab media, Silliman, who previously served as the US ambassador to Iraq and Kuwait, said President Donald Trump had entered the conflict with only one clearly defined objective: bringing an end to the Iranian government in Tehran.
However, after the US failed to achieve regime change in Iran, Trump began outlining five or six additional objectives in the following weeks, Silliman said. According to the former diplomat, the administration has now revised those goals once again.
Silliman said Trump is currently seeking negotiations focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restricting or eliminating Iran’s nuclear programme. The shift represents a significant change from the administration’s earlier position and raises questions about Washington’s broader objectives in the conflict.
The former US diplomat noted that Republicans inside the White House could present the changing objectives as an effort to refine and clarify the country’s military strategy as circumstances evolve.
Critics, however, are likely to interpret the repeated changes differently. According to Silliman, they could argue that the United States entered the war without a clear understanding of what it ultimately wanted to achieve and is now lowering its ambitions in an effort to find a way out of the conflict.
The comments come amid growing scrutiny of the Trump administration’s handling of the conflict and its attempts to balance military pressure on Tehran with the possibility of diplomatic negotiations.
Silliman’s assessment highlights the broader debate over whether Washington’s evolving demands represent a deliberate adjustment to changing conditions or reflect a lack of a coherent strategy from the outset.
