ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s electricity shortfall has risen beyond 4,000 megawatts, raising concerns about prolonged load-shedding across the country, according to sources at the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC).
Several power plants have reportedly gone offline, while lower hydropower generation has further widened the gap between electricity supply and demand.
Consumers in urban and rural areas are currently facing three to four hours of load-shedding, according to the sources.
The situation is more severe in the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) region, where the electricity shortfall has crossed 1,500MW.
LESCO sources attributed the increase to reduced availability of diesel, gas and hydropower. They said forced load-shedding of one hour after every hour was being carried out in parts of the LESCO region.
The sources warned that consumers could face severe power outages over the coming days if the supply situation does not improve.
