Govt cuts customs duty on petrol by Rs5.71 per liter

The federal government on Wednesday slashed customs duty on petrol by Rs5.71 per liter, bringing the price down from Rs26.27 per liter to Rs20.56 per liter with effect from October 28, 2026.

According to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the reduction reflects a decline in petrol’s ex-depot price despite an increase in its international benchmark cost.

Under the revised pricing calculation, petrol’s ex-depot price has decreased by Rs3.19 per liter, falling from Rs379.25 to Rs376.06 per liter.

The reduction in customs duty has helped offset higher import costs, providing some relief to consumers.

OGRA’s pricing document shows that the petrol cost at Karachi port increased from Rs241.40 to Rs244.73 per liter.

However, customs duty declined from Rs26.27 to Rs20.56 per liter, while the exchange rate adjustment fell from Rs0.82 to zero.

The revised petrol price includes a petroleum levy of Rs80 per liter and a climate support levy of Rs5 per litre. Sales tax remains zero-rated, according to the notification.

Meanwhile, high-speed diesel (HSD) has become more expensive under the latest adjustment. Its ex-depot price increased by Rs2.25 per litre, rising from Rs395.82 to Rs398.07 per litre.

The diesel price calculation retains the petroleum levy of Rs80 per liter and the climate support levy of Rs5 per litre, while sales tax remains zero.

The latest adjustment reflects changes in international petroleum benchmarks, import costs and other components of Pakistan’s domestic fuel pricing formula.

While the reduction offers some relief to petrol consumers, the increase in diesel prices could add to transportation and freight costs, potentially putting further pressure on businesses and consumers.

The revised rates take effect on October 28, 2026, in line with OGRA’s latest notification.
