Tharparkar ambulance blast kills 10 PPHI workers, CM orders probe

MITHI: A tragic ambulance explosion in Sindh’s Tharparkar district claimed the lives of 10 workers of the Peoples’ Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI), turning a routine night into a devastating incident that has prompted grief and calls for an investigation.

The explosion occurred late Wednesday night in the Dano Dhanal area when an oxygen cylinder fitted inside an ambulance suddenly exploded, killing seven people at the scene and leaving three others critically injured.

The three injured victims later succumbed to their burn injuries while being shifted to different hospitals for medical treatment, bringing the death toll to 10.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of medical equipment used in ambulances, although the exact cause of the cylinder explosion has yet to be established.

The loss of 10 healthcare workers has sent shockwaves through the area, where medical staff play a crucial role in providing essential services to communities spread across the vast and remote desert district.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. In his message, he conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and shared their grief over the tragedy.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also took notice of the incident and directed the relevant authorities to conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

The chief minister announced compensation of Rs2 million for the family of each deceased worker, offering financial assistance to the families left devastated by the sudden loss of their loved ones.

The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances of the explosion and establish what caused the oxygen cylinder to detonate inside the ambulance.

The tragedy has highlighted the importance of ensuring proper safety standards for oxygen cylinders and other medical equipment used in emergency vehicles, particularly those operating in remote areas where access to advanced medical facilities can be limited.

As authorities move to investigate the incident, the families of the 10 deceased workers face an immense personal loss, while the tragedy has renewed attention on the safety of healthcare personnel serving vulnerable communities in Tharparkar.
