US intelligence warns of Russian efforts to undermine polls

WASHINGTON: The US intelligence chiefs have warned of “attempts by foreign adversaries”, including Russia, to undermine public confidence in the presidential polls and the integrity of the electoral process along with fueling divisions within the society.

As reported by the BBC, a joint statement issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has said that “Russian-linked groups” were provoking violence against election officials and were making false claims of voter fraud.

Furthermore, the ODNI has predicted such efforts to intensify in coming days.

Texas, Missouri judges deny requests to block DOJ from sending poll monitors

US judges have denied requests from the Republican-led states of Missouri and Texas to block the federal government from sending lawyers to their states on Election Day to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws.

Both states are among the 27 that the US Justice Department (DOJ) said it would send staff out to monitor at voting locations, as it has done regularly during national elections.

Federal Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ordered the DOJ early on Tuesday to confirm that “no observers” would be present in polling locations in Texas but denied issuing the restraining order the state had requested.

“The Court cannot issue a temporary restraining order without further clarification on the distinction between ‘monitoring’ and ‘observing’ on the eve of a consequential election,” said Kacsmaryk, a Trump appointee.

White House rivals Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have tied with three votes each in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, marking the initial results of first midnight voting of the election day, reported CNN.

The township opened and closed its poll right after midnight ET, tracing back to the local 1960’s tradition. The participants included four Republicans and two more voters.

Regardless of the Dixville Notch’s small contribution to the making of ultimate winner, the local population of the township has been appreciative of the township kick starting the election day.
