Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stunned fans at the Venice International Film Festival with a striking physical transformation for his role in The Smashing Machine, where he portrays real-life MMA and UFC icon Mark Kerr.
The 53-year-old actor, known for his powerhouse physique, appeared slimmer than in recent roles, reflecting the dedication behind his new character. Directed and written by Benny Safdie, the film dives deep into Kerr’s rise and struggles inside and outside the ring.
Speaking about the role, Johnson said the transformation was both physical and emotional.
“This transformation was something I was really hungry to do,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve had the fortune of making big films over the years, but there was a voice inside of me that said, ‘What if I could do more?’ This role gave me that chance.”
Red carpet moments and emotional premiere
Emily Blunt, who stars as Kerr’s then-wife Dawn, joined Johnson at the festival.
The film’s premiere earned an extraordinary 15-minute standing ovation, leaving Johnson visibly moved as he wiped away tears. Safdie sank to his knees during the applause, while Kerr himself stood proudly alongside the cast.
