Sofía Vergara’s Emmy night turned into a hospital visit after the actress suffered what she called the “craziest eye allergy,” forcing her to miss television’s biggest evening.
The Modern Family alum, 53, revealed the ordeal on Instagram, sharing photos and videos from the emergency room instead of the red carpet.
She was slated to present at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 14, alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names, but her sudden health scare changed everything.
“Didn’t make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER ????????,” Vergara wrote, posting a close-up photo of her visibly swollen left eye. “Sorry I had to cancel! Craziest eye [allergy] right before getting in the car! ????????.”
Her post included a video of herself lying in a hospital bed as well as another clip where she was seen rinsing her eye at a hospital sink.
Fans flooded her comments with well-wishes, expressing both concern and relief that the actress was able to get quick medical attention.
According to a press release earlier this month, Vergara had been scheduled to appear as one of the night’s presenters.
The star-studded lineup also featured Angela Bassett, Jennifer Coolidge, Tina Fey, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Bateman, Sterling K. Brown, Kristen Bell, Colman Domingo, Mariska Hargitay, Jude Law, Sarah Paulson, Sydney Sweeney and Jesse Williams.
Her absence wasn’t the only surprise of the evening. Actor Eric Dane, who has been battling ALS, was also announced as a presenter but did not attend the event.
The 2025 Emmys were hosted by Grammy-nominated comedian Nate Bargatze and celebrated the best in television. HBO Max’s The Pitt was named Outstanding Drama Series, while Apple TV+’s The Studio took home the trophy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Adolescence dominated the Limited/Anthology category, sweeping all the major awards.
Among the individual winners were Noah Wyle (The Pitt), Britt Lower (Severance), Seth Rogen (The Studio), Jean Smart (Hacks), Jeff Hiller (Somebody Somewhere), Hannah Einbinder (Hacks), and Cristin Milioti (The Penguin).
History was also made as Owen Cooper, 15, became the youngest male actor ever to win in the Supporting Actor category for a Limited or Anthology Series, while Tramell Tillman became the first Black man to win Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in Severance.
