Lahore police warn against buying stolen mobile phones online

Authorities have issued a stern warning to consumers purchasing second-hand mobile phones online or from unregistered sellers, following alarming statistics that highlight the widespread use of stolen devices in the city.

According to the Lahore Police’s Mobile Tracking Unit, over 35,000 mobile phones were reported stolen or illegally used in the city between 2018 and 2025, with a combined estimated value exceeding Rs 87.5 million.

Police officials revealed that a significant number of these devices were purchased and used by unsuspecting buyers without proper verification. In 2025 alone, the authorities recovered more than 6,000 stolen mobile phones worth approximately Rs 15 million. Investigations indicated that 80% of these devices were used by individuals who had not verified their legitimacy, while 60% of buyers faced legal consequences for unknowingly handling stolen property.

“Consumers must exercise extreme caution when purchasing mobile phones online or from unofficial sources. Many of these devices have a history of theft, and buying them can lead to serious legal troubles,” said a senior police officer.

In response to the growing problem, Lahore Police plan to implement a targeted crackdown on online platforms and unregistered dealers involved in the sale of mobile phones and electronic gadgets. The initiative will include stricter monitoring of digital marketplaces to prevent the circulation of stolen devices.

Major shopping malls across Lahore have also been directed to verify all mobile phones through the e-Gadget app before buying or selling them, ensuring that devices are legally owned and traceable. Authorities emphasized that public awareness and responsible buying practices are crucial to curbing the theft and resale of mobile phones.
