Amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, a new concern has surfaced following claims circulated by Indian media outlets. According to these reports, Iran could gain access to more than 1,000 MANPADS (man-portable air defense systems), with allegations suggesting that China may be supplying these weapons through covert channels.
International coverage indicates that Iran has already demonstrated its capability to challenge U.S. air power. Reports claim that on April 3, Iranian forces targeted several American aircraft, including an F-15E Strike Eagle and an A-10 Warthog. Additionally, a highly advanced F-35 fighter jet reportedly sustained damage. Other high-value assets, such as aerial refueling tankers and an E-3 Sentry airborne radar system—worth nearly $1 billion—also came under attack.
According to a report by NDTV, MANPADS are relatively simple yet highly effective weapons. A single operator can carry and launch these shoulder-fired missiles, which track heat signatures from aircraft. With an operational range of around five kilometers, they pose a serious threat to low-flying aircraft, especially during close air support missions.
While the United States still maintains a strong advantage in air superiority, analysts warn that the situation could shift if a ground conflict begins. In such scenarios, aircraft often operate at lower altitudes to support troops, making them more vulnerable to these portable missile systems.
China has firmly denied the allegations of supplying weapons to Iran, dismissing the claims as unfounded. However, U.S. intelligence sources suggest that Iran might still obtain such weapons indirectly through third-party countries.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has urged China to refrain from providing any military assistance to Iran. He also issued a warning that countries involved in such transfers could face tariffs of up to 50 percent.
Reports also indicate that Iran may have used Chinese satellite technology and surveillance systems to improve its targeting capabilities, further intensifying concerns about the growing conflict. If Iran acquires a large number of MANPADS, experts believe it could significantly impact the balance of power, particularly in the event of a broader ground war.
