Japan, Vietnam sign 6 deals to boost energy and trade ties

Japan has strengthened its strategic and economic partnership with Vietnam as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visited Hanoi and signed multiple agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in energy, critical minerals, technology, agriculture, and space development.

During her official visit, Takaichi held talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, where both sides agreed to deepen bilateral ties and focus on long-term economic security. The leaders signed six key agreements covering a wide range of sectors designed to enhance development and supply chain resilience.

A major focus of the discussions was energy cooperation. Japan and Vietnam agreed to strengthen coordination on critical mineral resources and ensure stable supply chains at a time when global markets remain highly unstable due to geopolitical tensions and rising fuel prices.

Vietnam has increasingly sought support from Japan to secure reliable energy imports, particularly crude oil, as disruptions in global shipping routes and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East continue to affect supply stability. Japan is expected to assist in facilitating oil supplies for Vietnam’s Nghi Son Refinery under a broader regional energy initiative.

Trade between the two countries has shown steady growth, even as investment flows have fluctuated. While Japanese investment in Vietnam declined significantly in the first quarter of 2026, bilateral trade rose by more than 12 percent, reflecting strong underlying economic ties.

Beyond economic issues, both leaders also discussed regional security concerns, particularly tensions in the South China Sea. They reaffirmed the importance of resolving disputes peacefully under international law and maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Japan and Vietnam share similar concerns regarding territorial disputes in the region and have both been working to diversify partnerships amid global trade uncertainties and shifting geopolitical dynamics.

During her visit, Takaichi was also scheduled to meet senior Vietnamese leadership and deliver a keynote address at a major university event, highlighting the continued importance of Japan’s Indo-Pacific strategy and its evolving role in regional cooperation.
