Lionel Messi shines again as Inter Miami edge Cincinnati in eight-goal MLS thriller

Lionel Messi delivered another magical performance on Wednesday night as Inter Miami CF fought back to defeat FC Cincinnati 5-3 in a thrilling Major League Soccer clash packed with drama, goals and moments of brilliance.

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 fast approaching in North America, Messi appears to be reaching peak form at exactly the right time. The Argentine superstar scored twice, helped create two more goals and once again proved why he remains one of football’s biggest attractions even at the age of 38.

The match exploded into life in the 24th minute when Messi capitalized on a defensive mistake from Cincinnati defender Matt Miazga to give Miami the lead. However, the home side responded strongly and equalized before halftime through a penalty from Kevin Denkey.

Cincinnati carried the momentum into the second half as Pavel Bucha scored from close range to make it 2-1, sending the home crowd into celebration.

But Messi was far from finished.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner responded in stunning fashion in the 55th minute, calmly finishing a flowing move after receiving a cross from Rodrigo De Paul. Yet the drama continued as Brazilian star Evander restored Cincinnati’s lead with a thunderous long-range strike.

Inter Miami then produced a late comeback that completely changed the game. Messi brilliantly assisted young Argentine talent Mateo Silvetti before Mexico international German Berterame added another goal to put Miami ahead.

Messi sealed the unforgettable night in the 89th minute when he attacked a dangerous cross and forced the ball into the net after it bounced off the post and goalkeeper Roman Celentano.

The victory lifted Inter Miami to second place in the Eastern Conference with 25 points, while Messi’s tally rose to 11 goals in just 12 MLS matches this season.

After the match, Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos praised his team’s fighting spirit and intensity, insisting Miami are determined to prove that world-class football belongs in MLS.
