Pakistan, US agree to deepen security and economic ties

Pakistan and the United States have agreed to deepen cooperation in security, trade, and regional stability during high-level meetings held in Islamabad amid growing tensions in the Middle East.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur on Friday and discussed bilateral relations, counterterrorism cooperation, and the regional security situation.

Senior officials from both countries attended the meeting, including US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker and Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry.

During the talks, Naqvi said Pakistan and the United States had developed stronger relations during the administration of US President Donald Trump. He said the partnership between Islamabad and Washington was based on mutual trust, cooperation, and shared strategic interests.

The meeting focused heavily on security collaboration. Both sides exchanged views on strengthening joint efforts against terrorism, extremist networks, and narcotics trafficking. Officials also discussed improving coordination on intelligence sharing and regional security challenges.

Naqvi assured the American delegation that Pakistan had provided complete security arrangements for US companies working on the Reko Diq mining project, one of the country’s largest investment ventures.

The interior minister also highlighted the importance of expanding economic and travel connectivity between the two countries. He expressed hope that direct flights between Pakistan and the United States would begin in the near future to facilitate trade, business, and people-to-people exchanges.

The Middle East crisis also remained a major focus during the discussions. Naqvi stressed that Pakistan supported a peaceful and lasting resolution to ongoing regional tensions through diplomacy and dialogue.

A day earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held separate talks with Paul Kapur on bilateral relations and regional developments.

Dar appreciated recent diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States and welcomed growing engagement between Islamabad and Washington. He reiterated Pakistan’s position that international disputes should be resolved through negotiations and peaceful dialogue instead of confrontation.

The foreign minister also emphasized the importance of sustained high-level exchanges between both countries and called for stronger cooperation in trade, investment, development, and regional peace initiatives.

Paul Kapur acknowledged Pakistan’s role in regional mediation efforts and appreciated the positive momentum in bilateral relations. Both sides agreed to continue close coordination on economic partnerships, security cooperation, and diplomatic engagement in the coming months.
