Pakistan, UK vow to expand economic and strategic cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, with both sides expressing interest in expanding cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, security, and development.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Jonathan Powell, where discussions focused on enhancing economic and strategic collaboration between the two countries.

During the meeting, the British side also expressed strong interest in supporting Pakistan’s reform agenda and broadening cooperation across multiple sectors.

British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott said economic relations between Pakistan and the UK remain robust, describing Britain as Pakistan’s most significant economic partner in Europe.

She noted that more than 200 British companies are currently operating in Pakistan, with total investment exceeding Rs910 billion. She added that the UK is Pakistan’s third-largest export destination, while the continued presence of British firms reflects growing confidence in Pakistan’s economy.

According to Jane Marriott, bilateral trade between the two countries has crossed $6 billion, reaching its highest level to date. She said British companies are contributing significantly to employment generation, technology transfer, tax revenues, and export growth in Pakistan.

Officials said the expanding partnership between Pakistan and the UK is expected to further strengthen economic stability, investment opportunities, and sustainable development in both countries.
