The government is expected to convene a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) on June 3 as part of preparations for the Federal Budget 2026–27, official sources said on Friday.
According to sources, the meeting—likely to be chaired by the Prime Minister—will review and approve key budgetary proposals, national development priorities and macroeconomic targets for the upcoming fiscal year.
The NEC, which includes the chief ministers of all four provinces along with federal representatives, is the country’s top constitutional forum for approving overall development planning and economic direction.
Sources said the council will approve the national development budget for the new fiscal year, along with federal and provincial Public Sector Development Programmes (PSDPs), which outline major infrastructure and development projects across the country.
The meeting is also expected to finalize key macroeconomic indicators, including the national economic growth target for the next fiscal year, which will be formally presented for approval before the council.
Officials said recommendations prepared by the Annual Planning Coordination Committee will also be placed before the NEC for endorsement. These recommendations typically form the groundwork for development priorities and sector-wise allocations in the federal budget.
Sources added that the approval of both federal and provincial development programmes in the NEC is a crucial step before the final presentation of the federal budget in Parliament.
The upcoming meeting is expected to play a central role in shaping fiscal direction, investment priorities and development spending for the 2026–27 financial year.
