GENEVA: Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Geneva to protest against the policies of the Group of Seven (G7) nations ahead of the bloc’s annual summit, voicing concerns over global conflicts, climate change, economic inequality, and poverty.
The large-scale rally, attended by an estimated 20,000 people, was organized by the “9G7” coalition, a network of more than 60 organizations advocating for causes including Palestinian rights, environmental justice, and women’s empowerment. Protesters marched through the city carrying banners and chanting slogans critical of the policies pursued by major world powers, particularly the United States.
Demonstrators argued that the actions of leading industrialized nations have contributed to ongoing wars, deepened social and economic disparities, and accelerated environmental degradation worldwide. Organizers called for a more equitable global order and greater accountability from powerful governments.
As world leaders prepare to meet for the three-day G7 summit in Evian, French and Swiss authorities have implemented extensive security measures. Roads have been closed in key areas, and restrictions have been placed on unauthorized public gatherings to prevent disruptions during the high-profile event.
Tensions escalated later in the day when clashes broke out between a group of protesters and security forces. Police reportedly responded with tear gas and water cannons after incidents of vandalism and damage to several buildings. Authorities have not yet released details regarding arrests or injuries.
The demonstrations come at a time when analysts note shifting dynamics in the global economy. According to reports, the G7’s share of global economic output has declined significantly over recent decades, while the influence of emerging economies grouped under the BRICS alliance continues to expand, reshaping the balance of economic power on the international stage.
