Bangladesh PM chooses Malaysia, China for first foreign tour, skips India

DHAKA: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to embark on his first official foreign visit since taking office, choosing Malaysia and China as his inaugural destinations while bypassing neighbouring India.

According to the foreign ministry, Rahman will first travel to Malaysia on Sunday before heading to China the following day.

Officials said the visit to Beijing will focus on strengthening trade ties and expanding cooperation in infrastructure development. Key discussions are expected to include Chinese support for the long-delayed Teesta River project, which involves river management, dredging, and irrigation works.

The trip is being viewed as a major diplomatic move aimed at boosting Bangladesh’s economic partnerships, according to state-run BSS news agency.

Malaysia remains a key destination for Bangladeshi labour, hosting around 800,000 workers, making up a significant portion of its foreign workforce.

Analysts say the choice of destinations reflects Dhaka’s shifting diplomatic priorities following political changes in the country. Relations between Bangladesh and India have been strained since the 2024 political upheaval, which led to a change in government.

Although ties have somewhat stabilised under the current administration, tensions persist, including disputes over migration and the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is reportedly in India.

The upcoming visits are expected to set the tone for Bangladesh’s foreign policy direction under the new leadership, with a stronger focus on economic diplomacy and regional partnerships.
