The Punjab government has decided to introduce a modern Road Safety Audit System across the province, commissioning a feasibility study worth Rs300 million to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents, it was reported on Tuesday.
Under the proposed initiative, the government will appoint an independent third-party consultant in line with international standards to carry out a comprehensive road safety audit. The study will cover national, provincial, urban and inter-district roads throughout Punjab.
The audit will identify locations with a high risk of accidents and recommend practical safety measures to reduce hazards. It will include detailed assessments of road designs, intersections, U-turns, traffic signage, street lighting and pedestrian facilities to ensure that transport infrastructure meets recognised safety standards.
Officials said the project will also analyse traffic flow, investigate the causes of road accidents and examine engineering shortcomings using scientific methods. The recommendations produced through the audit will be incorporated into future development projects across the province.
The initiative is aimed at reducing road accidents, protecting the lives and property of citizens, and promoting a safer transport system. Officials said the project would lay the foundation for a modern road network by adopting advanced technology and internationally recognised road safety standards.
