Steve Smith equals world record for most Test catches

Australia’s star batter Steve Smith equalled the world record for the most catches in Test cricket after taking three catches on the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, it was reported on Friday.

The three catches took Smith’s tally to 218 catches in 124 Tests, putting him level with England’s Joe Root, who has also taken 218 catches in 166 Tests.

Former India captain and coach Rahul Dravid is third on the list with 210 catches, while former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is fourth with 205 catches in 149 Tests.

Former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis is fifth with 200 catches in 166 Tests.

Smith and Root are now set for a close battle to establish sole ownership of the record as both remain active in Test cricket.
