LONDON: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly preparing major changes to the Test squad after Pakistan suffered a heavy defeat against England at Lord’s, with wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan and opener Imam-ul-Haq set to return to Pakistan on an emergency basis.
The development follows an urgent meeting of Pakistan’s team management in London after England defeated the visitors by 194 runs on the fourth day of the second Test, clinching the three-match series.
According to reports, the decision to send Rizwan and Imam back was taken amid growing concerns over Pakistan’s batting performance. The team has struggled to build partnerships during the series, with the batting unit once again failing to withstand England’s bowling attack at Lord’s.
Rizwan has come under particular scrutiny after losing his wicket in an irresponsible manner in the second Test. The wicketkeeper had also failed to make a significant impact in the first Test at Leeds, increasing pressure on his place in the playing XI.
Imam-ul-Haq is also reportedly facing the axe as the PCB considers reshaping the Test squad before the final match of the series.
Pakistan’s defeat at Lord’s exposed several weaknesses, particularly in the batting department. Chasing 389 runs for victory, Pakistan were dismissed for just 194, despite Saud Shakeel producing a determined 97.
The result has prompted the team management and PCB to consider immediate changes rather than waiting until the end of the tour.
The third Test is scheduled to begin in Birmingham on September 9, and significant changes to Pakistan’s Test squad are now being anticipated.
The possible departures of Rizwan and Imam could open the door for younger players or reserve batters to earn an opportunity in the final Test.
For Pakistan, the immediate challenge is to stop the momentum from slipping further. With the series already lost, the Birmingham Test will provide the visitors with a chance to respond, assess their options and begin rebuilding ahead of future Test assignments.
