PML-N leader Captain (retd) Safdar has alleged that lawyers holding fake degrees are serving as members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), demanding verification of the credentials of those involved in shaping people’s destinies.
Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad on Tuesday, Captain Safdar said he had the right to demand that lawyers holding important constitutional positions produce their degrees.
He alleged that Supreme Court lawyer Amjad Shah, who is contesting the election for president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, holds a fake degree.
Safdar said the case concerning Amjad Shah’s degree had moved from the High Court to the Constitutional Court. He said he intended to file a petition in the Supreme Court before approaching the Constitutional Court.
He added that he would apologize to the lawyers if they produced their degrees and their credentials were verified.
The controversy comes ahead of the Supreme Court Bar Association elections scheduled for October 29, with Amjad Shah contesting for the presidency on the Independent Group’s ticket. Safdar has previously called for verification of the degrees of prominent lawyers, including Judicial Commission member Ahsan Bhoon.
Responding to recent statements by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Safdar said Tarar’s remarks had weakened his own case.
Safdar said Tarar was his junior in politics and recalled that the law minister had previously taken a stand against former ISI chief Faiz Hameed.
He said Tarar should continue taking a stand and urged him to also fight against the issue of fake degrees.
