‘May 9-like situation’ to be dealt with decisive force, warns army’s top brass

RAWALPINDI: The army’s top brass has warned that attempts to create a May 9-like situation or cause agitation will be met with “decisive force” and the rule of law, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The warning came during the 277th Corps Commanders’ Conference at General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi, chaired by Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on Friday.

According to a statement from the ISPR, the forum reviewed the prevailing security environment and resolved that any attempt to create agitation or a “May 9-like” situation on any pretext would be dealt with decisively under the rule of law, without hesitation or discrimination.

Terrorism emanating from Afghan soil

Turning to the regional security situation, the forum reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to self-defence and targeted action against terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.

It stated that the Taliban leadership facilitating terrorism on behalf of India bears responsibility for its consequences.

Discussing Kashmir, the forum reiterated Pakistan’s principled position on Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), supporting a resolution of the dispute in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

In his concluding remarks, the CDF Munir hailed commanders for their operational preparedness and directed them to further strengthen intelligence-based operations, enhance combat capabilities through modern technology, training and multi-domain integration.

He expressed confidence that the armed forces remain fully prepared to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security.

The conference also offered Fateha for the martyrs of the Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies and civil society.

Security, sanctity of Haramain Sharifain

On regional and international affairs, the forum welcomed the Makkah Defence Alliance signing between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye.

The army top brass also condemned Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia. It expressed solidarity with the Kingdom and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the security and sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain.

The statement followed the heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis following fresh cross-border attacks.

The Houthis have carried out repeated missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia since announcing a naval blockade on the Kingdom in July.

The group has targeted Saudi-linked vessels operating in the Red Sea as part of its campaign, further escalating tensions in the region.

The Houthis also targeted Saudi airports, energy facilities and other strategic infrastructure, with the Kingdom’s air defence systems intercepting many of the projectiles.
