Vatican envoy praises Pakistan’s role in regional peace

ISLAMABAD: Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, has praised Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability through dialogue, mediation and diplomacy.

The remarks came during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad on Friday. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, promoting interfaith harmony and discussing regional and international developments.

Archbishop Gallagher is visiting Pakistan from October 8 to 10 to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the Holy See.

During the meeting, Dar welcomed the visiting archbishop and appreciated the Holy See’s efforts to promote peace, religious harmony and dialogue among communities.

The foreign minister also acknowledged the contributions of Pakistan’s Catholic community, particularly in the education and healthcare sectors.

Dar expressed appreciation for Pope Leo XIV’s calls for peace and a just resolution to the Palestine conflict. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued support for the Palestinian people and their pursuit of a peaceful and just settlement.

Both sides expressed concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region and stressed the need for sustained international efforts to achieve peace.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of mutual respect, religious understanding and peaceful coexistence among different faiths. Both representatives reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation between Pakistan and the Holy See.

The visit marks a significant development in bilateral relations, as it is the first visit to Pakistan by a secretary for relations with states and international organisations of the Holy See.

During his stay, Archbishop Gallagher is also expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and interact with members of Pakistan’s Catholic community.

The visit reflects the shared interest of Pakistan and the Holy See in strengthening diplomatic engagement, encouraging interfaith dialogue and supporting international efforts to promote peace and stability.
