KARACHI: Indian security forces have arrested four Pakistani fishermen near Sir Creek, according to the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum. The fishermen were reportedly detained while fishing in the disputed maritime region.
Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Vice Chairman Noor Muhammad said Indian forces arrested the fishermen on Sunday and took their fibre fishing boat into custody.
According to Noor Muhammad, all four fishermen belong to Chhachh Jahan Khan, a coastal settlement in Sujawal district of Sindh.
The incident has raised concerns about the difficulties faced by fishermen operating near the maritime boundary between Pakistan and India. Fishermen from both countries have previously been detained after allegedly crossing into the other side’s territorial waters, sometimes because maritime boundaries are difficult to identify while fishing at sea.
The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum shared details of the latest arrests, but further information about the fishermen’s current whereabouts and their possible release was not immediately available.
The reported detention highlights the continuing challenges faced by coastal fishing communities whose livelihoods depend on access to fishing grounds near the two countries’ maritime border.
