DUBAI: Pakistan-origin all-rounder Antum Naqvi is finally set to begin his international cricket career after receiving clearance from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to represent Zimbabwe.
The Belgian-born cricketer has been included in Zimbabwe’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Afghanistan, bringing an end to a lengthy wait caused by citizenship and eligibility complications.
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirmed Naqvi’s eligibility on Wednesday, making him available for international selection for the first time. The Test series is scheduled to begin in Sharjah on Thursday.
Naqvi, who has been playing domestic cricket in Zimbabwe since 2023, has attracted attention with his impressive all-round performances. His inclusion is expected to strengthen Zimbabwe’s batting and bowling options as the team prepares for the challenging series.
The 27-year-old has an outstanding first-class record, averaging 60.35 with the bat in 24 matches. He has scored six centuries and eight half-centuries while also collecting 62 wickets, demonstrating his ability to contribute in both departments.
One of the biggest highlights of his domestic career came in 2024, when he created history by becoming the first batter to score a triple-century in Zimbabwe’s domestic first-class cricket. Playing for Mid-West Rhinos against Tuskers, Naqvi produced an unbeaten 300-run innings.
However, his journey towards international cricket has been far from straightforward.
Naqvi was initially selected for Zimbabwe’s T20I squad for the series against India in July 2024, but citizenship documentation issues prevented him from making his debut.
